UV Tanning in Wisbech. What You Need to Know

If you've never used a sunbed before, or you have but never really understood how it works, this page is for you. We'll explain how UV tanning actually works, help you figure out what's right for your skin type, and give you practical advice on building a tan that looks natural and lasts.

This isn't a sales page. It's the stuff we tell every new tanner who walks through the door at Boxcross.

How Does UV Tanning Actually Work?

Your skin contains a pigment called melanin. When UV light hits your skin, your body produces more melanin as a natural response. That's what gives you colour.

Sunbeds use controlled UV light to trigger this process in a shorter, more consistent way than lying outside. You're not getting a different kind of tan. it's the same biological process, just in a controlled environment where session length, intensity, and timing are managed.

The result is a gradual build of colour over multiple sessions. You won't walk out bronzed after one visit. It takes consistency, especially in the first week.

    Know Your Skin Type

Not everyone tans the same way. Your skin type determines how long your sessions should be, how quickly you'll see results, and how careful you need to be.

    • Type 1 (very fair, burns easily, rarely tans). short sessions only, build very slowly
    • Type 2 (fair, burns sometimes, tans gradually). start with 6–8 minutes and increase slowly
    • Type 3 (medium, burns occasionally, tans well). can handle longer sessions, builds colour quickly
    • Type 4 (olive/dark, rarely burns, tans easily). responds well to standard sessions

    Building Your Base Tan

The first week is about building a base. That means shorter, more frequent sessions. typically every other day for three to four visits. You won't see dramatic results immediately, and that's normal. Your skin is adjusting.

After that initial week, you'll notice colour developing. From there it's about maintenance. one or two sessions per week is usually enough to keep your tan looking consistent.

The biggest mistake people make is doing too much too soon. Longer sessions don't mean better results. They just mean more UV exposure without extra benefit. Your skin can only produce so much melanin per session.

Stand-Up vs Lay-Down. Which Is Better?

Neither is objectively better. They're different experiences and the right one depends on what you prefer.

Stand-up sunbeds are faster. usually 10 to 15 minutes. You stand inside a vertical booth, the UV hits you from all sides, and you're done. People who want to get in and out quickly tend to prefer these. The coverage is even because you're upright.

Lay-down sunbeds take a bit longer. 15 to 20 minutes. You lie back, close your eyes, and relax. A lot of people find them more comfortable. The coverage is smooth and thorough. If you find standing still for 15 minutes annoying, go lay-down.

At Boxcross we have Luxura beds for both options. Try each and see which suits you.

Do Tanning Creams Actually Do Anything?

Yes, if you use the right ones. We stock Pro Tan products because they work.

Accelerators help your skin produce melanin faster, which means you get more colour per session. Moisturisers keep your skin hydrated. dry skin reflects UV instead of absorbing it, so hydrated skin tans better. Bronzers add immediate cosmetic colour while your natural tan develops underneath.

You don't need products to tan. But if you want faster, longer-lasting results, they make a real difference. We can recommend the right one based on your skin type and goals.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

These are the things we see new tanners get wrong most often:

    • Going too long on your first session. start short, build up
    • Tanning every day. your skin needs at least 24 hours to recover between sessions
    • Not moisturising. dry skin doesn't tan well and peels faster
    • Wearing strong perfume or deodorant. these can react with UV and cause irritation
    • Expecting instant results. a good tan takes a week to build properly

    Is UV Tanning Safe?

UV tanning involves UV exposure, and like any UV exposure. including natural sunlight. it carries some risk if overdone. The key is moderation and consistency.

At Boxcross we assess your skin type before your first session. We recommend session lengths based on your skin, not on what you ask for. We track your exposure and we'll tell you if you're coming in too often.

We're not going to pretend sunbeds are risk-free. But used sensibly, with the right session length for your skin type and proper recovery time between visits, it's a controlled and manageable way to tan.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to see results?
Most people notice colour developing after two or three sessions. A proper base tan usually takes about a week of regular sessions. Don't expect dramatic results from a single visit.
    Can I tan if I'm very fair-skinned?
Yes, but you need to be more careful. Start with shorter sessions. around 6 minutes. and increase gradually. Some very fair skin types tan slowly but still develop colour over time. Talk to us before your first session.
Why does my tan sometimes look orange?
Usually because of overuse or cheap self-tanning products. UV tanning with proper products and sensible session lengths produces natural colour, not orange. If you've had this problem before, let us know and we'll adjust your plan.
    Can I tan with tattoos?
Yes. Existing tattoos will tan with the rest of your skin. If you have a fresh tattoo, wait until it's fully healed. usually two to three weeks. before tanning.
Should I shower before or after tanning?
Shower before if you want to remove any products from your skin. After tanning, wait at least a couple of hours before showering to let the tan develop fully, especially if you've used a bronzer or accelerator.
Can I use sunscreen in the sunbed?
No. Sunscreen blocks UV light, which defeats the purpose. If you feel you need sunscreen to handle the session, the session is too long for your skin type. We'll adjust the time instead.
