Why classes beat training alone

Group exercise classes in Wisbech run here every day of the week, 22 sessions in all. Every one is coached rather than supervised, and every one is scaled to whoever walks in.

Booking a class is a commitment device. You have a slot, someone is expecting you, and for 45 minutes you do not have to decide anything. That is most of why people who take classes stay consistent and people who wing it do not.

Every class here is coached, not just supervised. Small groups, technique corrected, intensity scaled to whoever turned up. Nobody is left at the back doing it wrong.

Bronze includes one class a week, Silver eight a month, Gold unlimited. All booked through the BoxCross app. Not a member? Adult classes are £6.99 pay as you go and kids’ classes £5.99, booked the same way.

The timetable sits inside a full fitness centre in Wisbech rather than a studio on its own, and one of the largest gyms in Wisbech at that. Your membership covers both buildings and over 120 pieces of equipment, and on Silver and Gold it includes 24 hour gym access in Wisbech, 365 days a year. Take a class at six and come back at midnight if that is what the week demands.

What runs

The classes, and who each is for

Boxing Basics 101

Mondays and Wednesdays at 7pm. The adult beginners’ boxing class: stance, footwork, form and pad work, coached by Daniel Higgs and Jordan Tilsey. No experience needed. More.

Adult BoxCross

Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. Boxing rounds and functional conditioning in one hour. All levels, no contact. This is the class most people mean when they say boxfit. More.

BoxCross Ride: spin

Thursdays at 6pm, 45 minutes, ten bikes. Intervals, climbs and sprints with the resistance under your own hand. Book early, it fills. More.

BoxCross Step

Wednesdays at 5pm, 45 minutes, coached by Owen Kitney-Foster. Rhythm, coordination and a serious calorie burn disguised as fun. Eight places, so book. More.

Ultimate Athlete

Mondays 6pm, Thursdays 6am and Fridays 6pm with Dave Carse and Daniel Higgs. Cardio and weight training in one fast full-body session: dumbbells, bodyweight and functional movements, moderate to high intensity. The hard one.

Early Burn Bootcamp

Mondays and Fridays at 6am with Dave Carse. An hour of functional circuits before work: strength, endurance and agility, then you are done for the day by seven.

Sunday Bootcamp

Sundays at 9am with Owen Kitney-Foster. The same circuit format at a civilised hour, beginner to advanced.

Women’s only

Women’s Only Fit and Functional on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm, and Women’s Boxing Basics 101 on Wednesdays at 6pm. Strength, conditioning and boxing fundamentals in a room where that pressure is not in play. More.

Kids and youth boxing

Six days a week. Ages 5 to 11 on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5pm, ages 12 to 16 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5pm, an all-ages under-16 session on Fridays at 5pm, and girls’ boxing fitness with Stevi Levy on Saturday mornings. More.

Sunday Run Club

Separate from the app timetable: a free biweekly 5K at 9am, open to members and non-members, dates posted on Instagram. More.

How to get on a class

Download the BoxCross app, pick your class, book your spot. Spaces are capped so the coaching stays useful, which means popular sessions fill.

Bronze includes a class a week, Silver eight a month and Gold unlimited, and month one is half price with FIRST50. Pick the one you like the look of and book it through the app.

Staff will help you set the app up if you would rather not fight with it.

Questions

Common questions

Are classes included in my membership?

Bronze includes one class a week, Silver an eight-class pack a month, Gold unlimited. Off-Peak includes one class. Extra classes can be added.

How do I book?

Through the BoxCross app, available on iPhone and Android. Staff will set it up with you if you want a hand.

What if I am completely unfit?

Every class is scaled. Coaches give you a version of each movement that matches where you are. Turning up is the hard part.

Can I try a class before committing long term?

There is no long term to commit to. Month one is half price with FIRST50, there is no contract, and every tier includes at least one class a week. Join here.

Do classes run at weekends?

Yes. Girls’ boxing fitness runs Saturday mornings at 10am and 11am, Sunday Bootcamp is 9am on Sundays, and the free Run Club goes out at 9am on alternate Sundays. Everything is bookable in the app.

Can I do a class without a membership?

Yes. Adult classes are £6.99 pay as you go and kids’ and youth classes £5.99, booked through the BoxCross app. If you end up coming twice a week, Bronze at £32.99 works out cheaper.

What time are the earliest and latest classes?

Early Burn Bootcamp and Ultimate Athlete start at 6am on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. The last classes of the day start at 7pm Monday to Thursday. Sunday Bootcamp is 9am.

Do you run Zumba in Wisbech?

No, and we would rather say so than waste your drive. Nothing on the timetable is Zumba. If it is the dance-to-music side you are after, the closest thing here is our step class, coached by a trainer with a dance background: choreography, rhythm and the same calorie burn, without the routine being the point. BoxCross Ride is where most people go for the music and the energy. Both are included from Bronze upwards.
