What the kids actually get out of it

The honest answer is confidence, and it shows up somewhere other than the gym. Children who could not look at an adult in week one are calling instructions across the room by week ten.

The sessions are built around fun. Games, assault courses, relays, stuck-in-the-mud, and boxing threaded through all of it. The younger group in particular does not know it is training.

The older group gets more technical: one-to-one time on technique, pad work, and some proper strength training on the machines. Friendships form, and the Monday and Wednesday kids’ class regularly books out.

Who teaches

Jordan Tilsey runs the weekday kids’ and youth classes and Stevi Levy, a professional boxer, runs the girls’ sessions herself. Coaches in the building have worked corners on televised cards. The standard of coaching is unusual for a children’s class in a town this size.

What to bring

Trainers, comfortable clothes, a water bottle. Gloves are provided.

Do they have to compete?

No. The overwhelming majority never will. The classes exist to build confidence, coordination and fitness. If a child does want to take it further, the pathway is right here.

Safeguarding

Coaches working with under-18s are DBS checked. Parents are welcome to stay and watch, and most do.
