Why the session length matters

The single most important variable in tanning is not the bed, it is how long you are on it relative to your skin type. Get that wrong and you burn, which is both unpleasant and the opposite of what you came for.

That is why sessions here are staffed rather than automated. Staff assess your skin type before your first session, set the time accordingly, and build up gradually. They will also tell you no, which an unattended machine cannot.

Creams and accelerators genuinely help, and aftercare extends how long the result lasts. Ask rather than guessing.

Guidance

Skin types and sessions

Fitzpatrick skin types

Type I, very fair and always burns, should not use a sunbed at all. Type II builds very slowly with short sessions. Types III and IV tolerate longer sessions and build more predictably. Staff will assess where you sit before your first session.

Building up

Short sessions with at least 24 hours between them, increasing gradually. Trying to shortcut this is how people burn.

Eyewear

Non-negotiable, and provided. Closing your eyes is not protection.

Which beds we run

The sunbeds in Wisbech at BoxCross are Luxura stand-up and lay-down units, kept in service and cleaned between every session. The stand-up gives a quick, even result in 10 to 15 minutes; the lay-down suits a longer, more relaxed 15 to 20 minutes. Both live in the Wisbech tanning studio, which runs as a sunbed shop in Wisbech in its own right with its own front door.

Creams and accelerators

Accelerators help the tan develop, extenders keep it longer, and aftercare stops your skin drying out. All stocked on site.

The honest safety note

UV exposure increases skin cancer risk, and no salon can tell you otherwise. Do not use a sunbed if you are under 18, if you have a history of skin cancer, if you have moles you are unsure about, if you burn easily and never tan, or if you take photosensitising medication. If anything on your skin has changed, see your GP before you book. Staff here will decline a session they do not think is sensible.

Questions

Common questions

How long should my first sunbed session be?

It depends on your skin type, and staff will assess that before your first session rather than letting you guess. Very fair skin that always burns should not use a sunbed at all.

How often can I tan?

Leave at least 24 hours between sessions and build up gradually.

Do I need a gym membership?

No. The tanning studio has its own entrance and is open to everyone over 18.

Where is the nearest sunbed shop in Wisbech?

Regal Road, PE13 2RQ, with its own entrance and parking on site. Walk-ins are welcome seven days a week and you do not need to be a member of anything.

Are sunbeds safe?

UV exposure carries a real increase in skin cancer risk and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Sessions are staffed and time-limited by skin type to reduce the risk of burning, but the risk is not zero. If you have any concern about your skin, speak to your GP first.

Ask before
you book.

Staff will assess your skin type and set a session length that is right for you. Walk in or call and we will talk it through.
