Women at BoxCross
A women’s gym
in Wisbech
A women’s gym in Wisbech in practice rather than in branding: women’s only classes, women coaches, and nobody making you feel you should not be in the free weight area.
The honest version
Plenty of women avoid the weights section of a gym, and the reason is usually not the weights. It is the feeling of being watched, or of not knowing what you are doing in a room full of people who look like they do.
Two things help with that here. The women’s only classes give you a room where that pressure is not in play, and the coaching means somebody shows you how the machine works rather than leaving you to guess.
The classes are consistently the ones members talk about most. High energy, hard work, plenty of laughing, and a group that notices when you have not been for a fortnight.
What runs
Women’s only on the timetable
Women’s Only Fit and Functional: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6pm
Structured strength and conditioning in a group, all abilities, one hour, twenty places, coached by Daniel Higgs. Come for the training, stay for the group. Book in the app.
Women’s Boxing Basics 101: Wednesdays, 6pm
Boxing for women who have never boxed: stance, footwork and the basic punches, no contact. Twelve places and it books out, so get in early. More on the boxing classes.
Girls' boxing fitness: Saturdays
Ages 5 to 10 at 10am and 11 to 16 at 11am, taught by professional boxer Stevi Levy. More.
Women’s personal training
Several women coaches take one-to-one clients, including one who lost four and a half stone herself and coaches from that experience. More on coaching.
Starting from nothing
Most women who join here have not trained seriously before, and a good number have not set foot in a gym since school. The induction exists for exactly that: twenty minutes with a coach who walks you round, shows you how three or four machines work, and writes down something you can repeat on your own next time. Nobody is watching, and if it feels like they are, the coach will tell you honestly that they are looking at their own set.
The free weight area
The part people are most nervous about is usually the racks, and the honest answer is that it is the friendliest corner of the building. Two buildings means there is space, so you are not squeezing between people. If you would rather learn a barbell squat without an audience, book a coach for one session and get it done in the quiet hours.
Changing rooms and facilities
The changing rooms and showers upstairs in the second building are new, with lockers, and there is an accessible toilet on the ground floor. Sanitary provision is stocked rather than assumed.
And the rest of the gym
All of it, all the time. Two buildings, 24-hour access on Silver and Gold, and an off-peak option at £21.99 if you would rather train when it is quiet.
